What to Do After Failing the CCP Exam: Your Resit Options, Explained

First: you almost certainly don't need to start over

A CCP exam fail feels like a bigger setback administratively than it usually is. As long as your 6-month registration period — which runs from your original clearance date — hasn't expired, failing doesn't put you back at square one. There's no fresh eligibility review, no new application, and no need to re-verify your experience. You simply pay the resit fee and AACE sends you a new clearance email to schedule your next attempt.

Step 1: Check your registration status

Your registration period is valid for six months from your clearance date. Your resit options and cost

AACE allows up to 3 total attempts within a single registration period — your initial sitting plus 2 reduced-fee resits — provided every attempt is taken before your registration's expiration date. There's no separate waiting period you have to sit out before scheduling a resit beyond the time it takes to receive your results and pay the resit fee.

Why your official result won't tell you what went wrong

It's tempting to assume your results will show which of the 7 domains dragged your average down — they won't. It's the policy of AACE's Certification Board to release CCP results on a pass/fail basis only; no individual or domain-level scores are provided for the official exam. That's a deliberate accreditation-driven policy, not an oversight, so don't wait for a breakdown that isn't coming.

A practical plan for your resit

1. Don't rebook in a panic. Check how much registration time you actually have left, and note the monthly grading-cycle timing below so you don't waste weeks waiting on results you could've planned around.

What if you fail a third time, or your registration expires

If you don't pass within your 3 total attempts, or your 6-month registration period runs out first (whichever happens first), you'll need to begin an entirely new registration and pay the full exam fee again — there's no discounted rate for a fresh registration, even if you were close on your last attempt. AACE doesn't offer refunds on exam fees already paid, for a resit or otherwise, so treat each attempt as a real commitment rather than a low-stakes try.

Results timeline: when you'll actually know

The multiple-choice portion is computer-scored instantly, but your memo is graded by AACE volunteer graders in monthly cycles beginning around the 15th, with results released roughly 2–3 weeks after that cycle closes. Sit your resit right after a monthly cutoff and your memo rolls into the following cycle — factor that lag into your planning so you're not caught scheduling a third attempt with only days left on your registration.
