CCP Eligibility Requirements 2026: Do You Qualify? (Complete Checklist)

By 3FOLD Training · AACE-Approved Education Provider · Updated 9 July 2026 · 6 min read

Quick answer: You qualify for the CCP® exam if you have 8 full years of industry-related experience, or 4 years of industry-related experience plus a 4-year industry-related degree. Experience must be verified by your employer — a CV alone is not accepted. There is no technical paper requirement under AACE's current process (CCP Candidate Handbook, rev. June 2026).

The two eligibility paths

PathExperienceEducation
Experience path8 years industry-relatedNo degree required
Degree path4 years industry-related4-year industry-related degree

"Industry-related" is broader than many candidates assume: cost estimating, cost control, planning and scheduling, project controls, quantity surveying, contracts and commercial management, and project management functions on capital projects all count. The degree path likewise accepts engineering, construction management, quantity surveying and similar built-environment or business degrees related to the field.

The verification rules that catch people out

  • Employer verification is mandatory. AACE will not accept your CV, résumé, job description, employment contract or another organisation's certification as proof. Verification must come from your employer, with dates of service, title and a brief description of duties — AACE provides an Employment Verification Form.
  • Past employers count. If a previous employer is unreachable or defunct, your current employer may verify prior employment if it was confirmed in their background checks.
  • Self-employed? You must submit substantiation under AACE's Self-Employment Policy instead.
  • English only. All verification documents must be in English or carry an official English translation.

No technical paper — a common misconception

Older articles still claim CCP candidates must write a 2,500-word technical paper. Under AACE's current process, this is no longer an eligibility requirement. The only written component today is the memo inside the exam itself. If a provider's website still lists the technical paper, their material predates the current handbook — a useful freshness test when choosing a course. For the complete exam structure once you're eligible, see our CCP certification guide.

Self-check: can you apply this month?

  1. Count your industry-related years (project roles, not total career years). ≥ 8, or ≥ 4 with a related 4-year degree?
  2. Can each period be verified by an employer (or via your current employer's background checks / self-employment substantiation)?
  3. Are your documents in English or officially translated?
  4. Budget ready? Exam fee is $525 (AACE members) / $690 (non-members); training is separate — see our full CCP certification cost breakdown.
  5. Timeline ready? Your registration period runs 6 months from clearance — ideally start structured prep before you apply.

Borderline profile — career gaps, mixed roles, unverifiable employer? Don't guess. Frequently asked questions

Does a diploma or 3-year degree qualify for the 4-year path?+
The degree path specifies a 4-year industry-related degree. With a 3-year degree or diploma you'd typically need the full 8 years of experience — but individual cases vary, so confirm with AACE or ask us to review your profile.
Do internships or part-time work count as experience?+
AACE counts industry-related experience; substantial, verifiable part-time or internship work in relevant functions may contribute. Document dates and duties clearly and expect it to be assessed case by case.
Do I need to be an AACE member to apply?+
No. Membership is optional — members pay a lower exam fee ($525 vs $690) and get discounted study materials, so it often pays for itself.
Is there an interview or portfolio review?+
No. Eligibility is document-based: verified experience (plus degree if using the 4-year path). Then you sit the exam.
