How to Write the CCP In-Exam Memo (Domain 7): Structure, Timing and Grader Expectations

Why the memo decides so many results

Technically strong candidates lose the CCP on the memo with depressing regularity — not because they can't write, but because they've never produced a graded professional memo under exam pressure. Remember the maths: Domain 7 is one of only seven domains averaged into your result. What you're actually asked to do

You receive a realistic scenario — think cost overrun analysis, forecast justification, change-order recommendation, or explaining earned-value results to management — and must respond as the cost professional in that situation, in memo form, addressed appropriately. It is graded by human AACE volunteer graders (which is why memo results follow monthly grading cycles) against professional communication standards: structure, clarity, technical soundness and a defensible recommendation. The structure graders expect

1. Header: To / From / Date / Subject — plus your AACE ID number as instructed.
2. Purpose (1–2 sentences): why this memo exists. State it plainly: “This memo analyses the Q3 cost variance and recommends corrective action.”
3. Findings & analysis (the body): the relevant facts and your reasoning. Use the scenario's numbers; show cause, not just symptom. Short paragraphs or crisp bullet-style sentences beat walls of text.
4. Recommendation (decisive close): what management should do, by when, and the cost consequence of inaction. Graders reward a clear position.

Timing strategy inside the 5 hours

AACE's guidance — allow 40–60 minutes — is realistic. The proven pattern: answer the 119 MCQs first at roughly two minutes each, bank the memo hour, then write with 10 minutes of planning, 35 of writing, 10 of editing. Never leave the memo to "whatever time is left": an unfinished Domain 7 is a self-inflicted domain score of near zero.

The five memo mistakes graders see most

• Writing an essay instead of a memo — no header, no addressee, no structure.
• Ignoring the scenario's data and writing generic theory.
• No recommendation, or a hedge ("management may wish to consider…").
• Forgetting the AACE ID number required in the response.
• Spending 90 minutes on it and starving the MCQs — or 15 and starving the memo.
