CCP vs PMP: Which Certification Should Cost Professionals Choose?

By 3FOLD Training · AACE-Approved Education Provider · Updated 9 July 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: Choose the CCP if your career is in cost engineering, cost control, estimating or project controls — it is the depth credential for cost. Choose the PMP if you're moving into general project management responsibility. They measure different things: the CCP proves you can own the numbers; the PMP proves you can own the project. Many senior professionals in EPC and construction eventually hold both.

Two certifications, two different questions

The comparison feels natural because both are the "flagship" credential of their body — AACE International for the CCP, PMI for the PMP. But they answer different career questions. The PMP asks: can you lead a project — scope, schedule, team, stakeholders, delivery? The CCP asks: can you be trusted with a capital project's money — estimates, budgets, forecasts, earned value, cost risk? Check whether you currently meet the CCP eligibility requirements.

What the job market actually rewards

Scan senior project-controls and cost-management postings in the Gulf, North America or on major EPC frameworks and a pattern appears: cost-titled roles name AACE credentials; delivery-titled roles name the PMP. Owners and PMCs staffing cost assurance, estimating review or earned-value functions want the CCP because it certifies the exact competency the seat carries. A PMP on a cost engineer's CV is a nice-to-have; a CCP on it is the qualification. For a full view of how CCP timing fits your career, see our cost engineer career path guide.

The "both" strategy

For professionals aiming at project controls leadership — where you manage the cost function and sit at the project leadership table — holding both is a genuinely powerful combination, and the two bodies of knowledge overlap enough (scheduling, risk, stakeholder communication) that the second certification comes noticeably cheaper in study hours than the first. Sequence by your current role: cost seat first → CCP first.

3FOLD Training is in the unusual position of being both an AACE-Approved Education Provider and a PMI Authorized Training Partner, so we say this with no horse in the race: match the credential to the seat you want, not to which exam looks easier. Frequently asked questions

Is the CCP harder than the PMP?+
They're hard in different ways. The CCP is longer (up to 5 hours), closed book, quantitative, and includes a graded written memo. The PMP is broader and more situational. Cost professionals usually find CCP content more familiar but the format more demanding.
Does the CCP count towards PMP renewal (PDUs)?+
CCP preparation and AACE professional development activities can generally be claimed as PDUs under PMI's education categories — check PMI's current CCR guidelines for how to log them.
Which pays more, CCP or PMP?+
It depends on the role, not the certificate. Senior cost/project-controls positions requiring CCP and senior PM positions requiring PMP both sit near the top of project-services pay scales in their markets.
Can I do the CCP without a degree?+
Yes — 8 years of industry-related, employer-verified experience qualifies you without any degree.
